Key principles when set-up listening room (Part 1)

2015-02-09

To have a good sound system, not only selection the right equipment to pair with each other but also mention to the layout arrangement so that the system can bring into play maximum performance quality.

Restrict the maximum vibration affecting on source equipments

Users should arrange loudspeaker as far as possible from source equipments because of these devices as CD, DVD, carbon CD player is very "sensitive" with the vibration. When loudspeaker is placed too close, invisible sound waves will create an outside vibration affecting on the movement of the tray back, read-eye, changing the acoustic character and causing incorrect language.

The good system shows a balance sound picture

A system is considered to be a set-up correctly when it can show a balance sound picture in which listener feels a singer is standing in front of the position of music instruments, the depth of the performance space, etc.

Best listening position and performance space

The best listening position in room is a place where the signal intensity from the loudspeaker to your ear is stronger (or at least equal) than the feedback sound wave from ceiling, walls and floor. Thus, the simple way to access sound directly is that you can move sitting position to near the loudspeaker due to when you can receive the correct amount of between direct and indirect (feedback) sound, at that time, the sound image or performance space will be reflected accurately in accordance with the origin. Listeners will feel better about the depth and width of the stage.

Away from walls

This is a rule rather classic being still talked again many times by the audio specialist in times of consultant about set-up sound system. The walls, corners, space under stair is the positions will create a bass enhance, causing deformed sound. To avoid room resonance and ensure that the loudspeaker system must be placed in the open position, not being pressed by big walls or other objects although there is a space of time between direct wave and feedback wave to listener’s ear. Similarly in sitting position, you should not sit too close to the behind wall and away from side wall about 1m at least. If sitting near a wall, you will hear the whole of feedback waves from walls, losing the truth of the sound.

Avoid listening room sound-proof

An each loudspeaker in the system can cause sound-proof in the line with listening room sound-proof causing atmospherics. The room sound-proof occurs in three ways of listening room: horizontally, high, and depth of the room. The level of sound-proof at the horizontal is high or low depends on the distance between loudspeaker and two side walls. Similarly, depth sound-proof depends on the distance between loudspeaker and two of front and behind wall sides.

To optimize, you should put view of loudspeaker in sitting position to sit hear being a triangle with an angle of 15 degrees (compared with a parallel axis of side wall). This helps reduce room sound-proof, especially rooms have too many bass (reverberated with bass). In case of having still echo sound, you can increase the angle of loudspeaker on about 20 degrees.

Use of sound-proof materials

In order to minimize room resonance and deformed sound by the feedback sound wave, you can use more sound-proof materials. It should not be left blank in two sides; instead, you can use a bookshelf, disk shelf or processing of the wood sound-amplified box. Pads carpets and uses more curtains or soundproof mousse to past on the wall and ceiling. Note, resonance upon the height and standing waves have an effect on the sound quality, thus it is best to handle ceiling with mousse. An expense for the ceiling soundproof is not too high. If there is no condition, you can only process the area in mid-ceiling with a horizontal at 1.5 to 2 m stretching to the end of the behind wall.
